Quick summary
Enter a word count to see how long it takes to read or say aloud. Silent reading averages ~250 words per minute, reading aloud or giving a speech about 130. A 1,500-word article is roughly 6 minutes to read silently; the same text spoken runs about 11.5 minutes. The tool also shows slow, average, and fast reader estimates so you can bracket the range.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to read a certain number of words?
Divide the word count by reading speed. At the average 250 words per minute, 1,500 words takes about 6 minutes. This calculator does the math and shows a range for slow (150 wpm) to fast (400 wpm) readers.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
Spoken delivery averages ~130 words per minute, so a 5-minute speech is roughly 650 words — fewer if you pause for emphasis or slides. Switch this tool to 'reading aloud' mode to plan a talk to a target length.
What is an average reading speed?
Adults read silently at about 200–300 words per minute, with 250 a common average. Reading aloud is slower (~130 wpm), and comprehension of dense material is slower still. Speed-readers claim much higher rates, often with reduced comprehension.
Why show slow, average, and fast times?
Your audience isn't one speed. Showing 150, 250, and 400 wpm brackets the realistic range — useful for setting a 'X min read' label on an article or making sure a speech fits its slot for both quick and deliberate speakers.
Key terms
- Words Per Minute (WPM)
- Reading or speaking pace; ~250 silent reading, ~130 aloud.
- Reading Time
- Word count ÷ reading speed — the estimate shown as an 'X min read' label.
- Speaking Rate
- The slower pace of reading aloud, used to time speeches and scripts.
