Quick summary

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits with no colon. From 1 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour: 7:30 PM is 1930. Morning hours keep their number with a leading zero (9:05 AM is 0905). The two exceptions are the 12 o'clock hours: 12 AM (midnight) becomes 00, so 12:30 AM is 0030, and 12 PM (noon) stays 1200. To go back, subtract 12 from any hour above 12 and call it PM; 2359 is 11:59 PM.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the direction in Convert: 12-hour to 24-hour (military), or 24-hour (military) to 12-hour.
  2. For 12-hour time, enter the Hour (1 to 12) and Minute (0 to 59), then pick AM or PM.
  3. For military time, type the 24-Hour Time as four digits, such as 0030 or 1930 (19:30 with a colon also works).
  4. Read the converted time at the top of the result, with the other format and the rule that was applied below it.
  5. Use the chart under the converter for a quick look-up of every hour from 0000 to 2300.

How to Convert Military Time

12-hour to military time

H24={012 AMH121 to 11 AM, and 12 PMH12+121 to 11 PMH_{24} = \begin{cases} 0 & \text{12 AM} \\ H_{12} & \text{1 to 11 AM, and 12 PM} \\ H_{12} + 12 & \text{1 to 11 PM} \end{cases}
H₁₂
Hour on the 12-hour clock (1 to 12)
H₂₄
Hour on the 24-hour clock (00 to 23); minutes never change

Worked example

7:30 PM

Given
Hour = 7 PM
Minute = 30
Calculation
7+12=19⇒19307 + 12 = 19 \Rightarrow 1930
Result
7:30 PM = 1930 hours (19:30)

HHMM
Four digits: the first two are the hour, the last two the minutes

Worked example

0030 and 2145

Given
2145 = hour 21, minute 45
0030 = hour 00, minute 30
Calculation
00⇒12 AM;21−12=9 PM00 \Rightarrow 12 \text{ AM}; \quad 21 - 12 = 9 \text{ PM}
Result
0030 = 12:30 AM; 2145 = 9:45 PM

Frequently asked questions

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Midnight is written 0000 — it is the first minute of the new day, and the clock runs from 0000 to 2359. You may see 2400 used to mark the end of a day, such as a shift or a schedule that runs until midnight, but it is not a clock reading, so this converter does not accept it. 2400 on one day is the same moment as 0000 on the next.

What is 12 PM in military time?

12 PM is noon, which is 1200 in military time. Noon is the one PM hour you do not add 12 to — 12:45 PM is 1245, and 1:00 PM is 1300.

How do you say military time out loud?

Speak the four digits as two pairs, often followed by "hours": 1930 is "nineteen thirty hours", 0800 is "zero eight hundred hours", and 1200 is "twelve hundred hours". Leading zeros are commonly said as "zero" (or "oh" in casual use).

Is military time the same as 24-hour time?

They use the same hours. The 24-hour format most of the world uses usually includes a colon (19:30), while US military style drops the colon and keeps all four digits (1930). Military time zones also add a letter suffix, such as Z for UTC, which this converter does not change.

What time is 1900 in military time?

1900 is 7:00 PM. Subtract 12 from any hour from 13 to 23 to get the PM hour: 1900 becomes 7 PM, 1500 becomes 3 PM, and 2300 becomes 11 PM. Hours from 01 to 11 are AM with the same number.
