Time Card Calculator

Clock in and out times → total hours, overtime, and pay for the period

Time Entries

Quick summary

Enter clock-in and clock-out times for each day (with unpaid break minutes) and the calculator totals your hours, splits regular from overtime at the 40-hour threshold (adjustable), and computes pay at 1.5× for the overtime portion. Overnight shifts — clock-out earlier than clock-in — are handled automatically by assuming the shift crosses midnight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked from clock in and clock out?

Subtract clock-in from clock-out, then subtract any unpaid break time. Working 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 8 hours minus 0.5 hours = 7.5 hours. Paid breaks (usually under 20 minutes under FLSA guidance) should NOT be subtracted — only unpaid meal periods.

How does overtime get calculated on a time card?

Federal law counts overtime after 40 hours in a single workweek, paid at 1.5× the regular rate for the excess. If your five days total 50 hours, that's 40 regular + 10 overtime — this calculator splits it automatically once you set your hourly rate.

How do I handle an overnight shift on a time card?

If clock-out is earlier than clock-in (e.g., 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the shift is treated as crossing midnight and the hours are calculated correctly — an 8-hour overnight shift shows as 8 hours, not a negative number.

Should lunch breaks count as work hours?

Only if they're paid or you're not fully relieved of duties. A genuine unpaid meal break (typically 30+ minutes, off-duty) is excluded from hours worked under FLSA — enter it as break minutes and it's subtracted automatically.

Key terms

Timesheet
A record of hours worked per period — what this calculator produces from raw clock times.
Overtime Threshold
Federal default is 40 hours/week; some states and the 8/80 hospital rule differ.
Unpaid Break
Off-duty meal periods excluded from paid hours — distinct from short paid rest breaks.
