Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15–20% is the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service. 18% is common for good service, 20% for great service, and 25%+ for exceptional service. Buffets typically warrant 10%. Counter-service restaurants do not traditionally require a tip.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct and traditional. However, tipping on the post-tax amount is increasingly common and the difference is minor. Either is acceptable.
How do I split the bill evenly?
Enter the total bill, choose a tip percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator divides the total (bill + tip) equally. For unequal splits, calculate the bill total and divide manually.
Do I tip on delivery orders?
Yes. The standard for food delivery is 10–15% of the order total, with a minimum of $3–5 for small orders. For large or complex orders, 15–20% is appropriate. Tips go directly to the driver.
