Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage off?
Multiply the original price by the decimal equivalent of the discount. For example, 20% off $50 = $50 × 0.20 = $10 discount → $40 sale price. Or: $50 × (1 − 0.20) = $40.
How do I find the original price if I know the sale price and discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount as decimal). For example, if an item is $60 after a 25% discount: $60 ÷ (1 − 0.25) = $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80 original price.
Does the discount apply before or after tax?
In the US, discounts and coupons are applied to the pre-tax price. Sales tax is then calculated on the discounted (lower) price. This calculator follows that standard.
What is the difference between discount and markdown?
A discount is a reduction applied for a specific reason (coupon, promotion, bulk order). A markdown is a permanent reduction in the listed retail price, typically used in retail inventory management. Both are calculated the same way.

- Sale Price
