Quick summary
Enter a number to convert it to scientific notation — a coefficient between 1 and 10 times a power of ten. 15,000,000,000 becomes 1.5 × 10¹⁰ (E-notation 1.5e+10). The tool also shows engineering notation, which keeps the exponent a multiple of three (15 × 10⁹) to match metric prefixes. It handles very large and very small numbers, and accepts E-notation input too.

Frequently asked questions
What is scientific notation?
Scientific notation writes a number as a coefficient between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten. For example, 15,000,000,000 = 1.5 × 10¹⁰ and 0.00042 = 4.2 × 10⁻⁴. It makes very large and very small numbers compact and easy to compare.
How do I convert a number to scientific notation?
Move the decimal point so one non-zero digit remains to its left; the number of places moved is the exponent (positive if you moved left, negative if right). 15,000,000,000 → 1.5 with the decimal moved 10 places left, so 1.5 × 10¹⁰. The calculator does this automatically.
What is engineering notation?
Engineering notation is like scientific notation but the exponent is always a multiple of three, so it lines up with metric prefixes (10³ = kilo, 10⁶ = mega, 10⁻³ = milli). So 1.5 × 10¹⁰ becomes 15 × 10⁹. It's popular in engineering and electronics.
What is E-notation?
E-notation is how calculators and computers write scientific notation, replacing '× 10^' with 'e'. So 1.5 × 10¹⁰ is 1.5e+10 and 4.2 × 10⁻⁴ is 4.2e-4. It means exactly the same thing; this tool shows both forms.
