Gift Budget Calculator

Set a budget, assign a gift to each person, and track what's left

Budget & Recipients

Quick summary

List everyone you're buying for, assign a planned amount to each, and set a total budget — the calculator tracks your planned spending, what remains, your average per person, and each recipient's share. With the sample list ($500 budget; $100 each for Mom and Dad, $150 for a partner, $50 for a best friend), you've planned $400 and have $100 left. It flags when your list outgrows your budget, so you can rebalance before the shopping starts. It works for holidays, birthdays, weddings, or any gift-giving season.

Gift Budget Formula

Remaining Budget and Average Gift

Remaining=B−∑i=1ngi,Average=∑i=1ngin\text{Remaining} = B - \sum_{i=1}^{n} g_i, \qquad \text{Average} = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} g_i}{n}
B
Total gift budget
g_i
Planned gift amount for recipient i
n
Number of recipients

Worked example

The sample list: a $500 budget with gifts for Mom, Dad, a partner, and a best friend

Given
B = $500
g (Mom, Dad, Partner, Best Friend) = $100, $100, $150, $50
n = 4
Calculation
500−(100+100+150+50)=500−400=100;4004=100500 - (100 + 100 + 150 + 50) = 500 - 400 = 100; \quad \frac{400}{4} = 100
Result
$100 remaining, $100 average gift; the partner's $150 is 37.5% of planned spending

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a gift budget?

Decide the total you can comfortably spend first, then divide it across your list — usually more for immediate family and less for acquaintances. Enter that total, add each person with a planned amount, and the calculator shows how much is left or how far over you are, so you can adjust before you start buying.

How much should I spend per person?

There's no rule — it depends on your budget and your relationships. Many people spend more on a partner, children, and parents, and a modest amount on friends and coworkers. Seeing each gift as a percentage of your planned spending, which this tool shows next to every name, helps keep the proportions where you want them.

What does the percentage next to each name mean?

It's that person's share of your total planned spending, not of your overall budget. With the sample list, the partner's $150 gift is 37.5% of the $400 planned. Seeing shares helps you notice when one gift dominates the list, or when someone close to you ends up with less than you intended.

What happens when I go over budget?

The headline switches from Remaining to Over Budget By and shows how far your planned gifts exceed the total, and the results card is outlined in red. To get back on track, lower a few amounts, remove a recipient, or swap expensive gifts for homemade or experience gifts. Raise the total budget only if you can truly afford it.

How do I avoid overspending during the holidays?

Set the total first and make the list fit it, not the other way around. Plan amounts before you shop, include often-forgotten costs such as wrapping, shipping, and cards, and check the remaining figure as you go. Writing the plan down before you shop is one of the simplest ways to avoid a surprise credit card bill in January.

Should I budget for wrapping and shipping?

Yes — they add up quickly, especially when you mail gifts to family far away. Add a line called 'Wrapping & shipping' as if it were a recipient, or pad each gift amount slightly. It's one of the costs people most often leave out of their plan, and including it keeps your remaining figure honest.

Is my gift list saved or shared?

Your entries are kept only in your browser's session storage so they survive a page refresh; nothing is sent to a server. Closing the browser tab clears them, so write down your final list or take a screenshot if you want to keep it for later.
